I don't have any problem with helping the poor or partnering with long-term missionaries; in fact, I think that those are great activities to do on a mission trip. However, I think that those are the means, not the end, of short-term missions. The end of any mission trip, quite simply, (to quote the Westminster Shorter Catechism) is the glory. Christian mission organisations have long depended on the printed word as a channel through which to do mission. At times when countries have been "closed" to Christians, great efforts have been made to smuggle Bibles and other literature into those countries.

All missions books point to one thing: the believer’s call to fulfill the Great Commission. These books not only help us learn about missions, they encourage us to action. This is done through full-time service overseas, short-term trips, work among international people groups in the United States, financial support, and many other avenues as believers share the gospel with their neighbors and with the nations.

As a future missionary, I can honestly say that the books I have read have shaped my perspective on the world and God’s heart for all nations to know His name. What books should missionaries read. Each individual who gave these recommendations is passionate about loving the Lord, people, and serving on the mission field.

One Mission is my ‘must read’ leadership book so far for It follows straight on from another great book (Team of Teams) by the guy who wrote the Foreword – Gen Stanley McChrystal. I read that book and was blown away by it.
